Edwardsburg picked up a 46-43 road win in their girls basketball season debut Tuesday at Portage Central.
PC had the opening bucket and led for the entire first quarter, holding a 10-7 advantage at the end of the frame. Kaitlyn Zarycki came alive in the second quarter for Edwardsburg, grabbing the lead for her squad with seven consecutive points. The Eddies held the Mustangs to three in the quarter and took a 19-13 lead into halftime.
Edwardsburg extended the lead up to nine points in the third quarter, but Portage Central whittled it down to one at 30-29 by the start of the fourth. The Eddies got it back up to 42-34 midway through the fourth, but PC answered with a 9-0 run. Abby Long hit a corner three with about a minute to go to put Portage Central ahead 43-42.
The Mustang lead only lasted a few seconds as Zarycki made two free throws via the double bonus for a 44-43 score. PC opted for an open three with 20 seconds left but missed, followed by two more Zarycki free throws after an Eddie rebound.
Portage Central tried for a quick two and missed, followed by an Edwardsburg rebound. They left the door open twice by missing two free throws, getting a steal, then missing two more free throws. With five seconds left, the Mustangs lost the ball at midcourt, allowing the Eddies to survive with the road win.
Zarycki led Edwardsburg with 18 points. PC’s Long topped all players with 21, including five three-pointers. The Mustangs were a strong 14-17 from the foul line with the Eddies going 12-25.
Edwardsburg returns to action at Allegan Friday with Portage Central traveling Friday to Mattawan.
