There were numerous opportunities for the Otsego Bulldogs to score against the Edwardsburg Eddies on Friday night. The hometown Bulldogs moved the ball with ease against the Eddies throughout the first half, but each time the Edwardsburg defense would stand tall.
On Otsego’s first drive of the game, they were able to make it to the Edwardsburg 20 yard line before having their 37-yard field goal attempt blocked. Their second drive ended with a goalline fumble and an Edwardsburg recovery, and their third drive stalled out at the Edwardsburg 4 yard line as they were denied on a 4th and 2 attempt. Those three missed opportunities haunted the Bulldogs who quickly fell behind to the Eddies, and stayed behind the entire game as Edwardsburg would win the contest 48-0. Even though the Eddies defense gave up some yards to the Otsego offense they still stood tough with their backs against the wall.
The Edwardsburg offense, on the other hand, had no issues moving the ball against the Bulldogs defense. The Eddies didn’t have a play longer than 19 yards throughout the first game against Dowagiac, but that changed dramatically against Otsego. Edwardsburg scored on each possession during the game. Their first score came on a 1yd TD run by Dillon Hursh, which was set up by a Mac Gaideski 51 yard run on 4th and 6.
After denying the Bulldogs a field goal, the Eddies Gaideski would score from 15 yards away. After a goalline turnover by Otsego, Hursh would shed tacklers en route to a 70-yard touchdown run. The longest of the season for Edwardsburg. With time expiring in the second quarter Dylan Morley would kick a 36 yard field goal to increase the Eddies lead to 25-0.
It was more of the same in the second half as Gaideski would score again from 57 yards away. Jaylynn Luster would get into the act and scored on runs of 9 yards and 71 yards – the new longest run for the Eddies this season.
Edwardsburg would finish with 465 yards of offense, and Otsego would have 257. The Eddies rushed for 412 yards on 29 plays. The Bulldogs rushed 44 times for 197 yards. Otsego would lead in the passing category as Owen Watson was 3/8 for 62 yards. Connor Nelson of Edwardsburg was 3/4 for 53 yards.
Gaideski led all rushers with 2 touchdowns and 189 yards rushing, Hursh had four carries for 83 yards and two scores, and Luster had 2 carries for 80 yards and two scores. Otsego was led by Ashton Atwater who ran 20 times for 105 yards. Derek Ward ran 9 times for 62 yards.
Otsego (1-1) will go on to face Three Rivers in week 3, while the Eddies (2-0) host the Sturgis Trojans (1-1).
