The Sturgis boys soccer team was knocked out in Wednesday’s District 17 first round match, falling 3-0 to hosting St. Joseph. The Trojans made the SMAC co-champs fight for the win, only trailing 1-0 at halftime.
Sturgis goalkeeper Renato Arias made the Bears work as he recorded 11 saves, but the 14-2 disparity in shots-on-goal was too much to overcome. Jack Pender had the lone first half goal in the 33rd minute for St. Joe. Seth Walters (58′) and Andrew Loikits (67′) added to the Bears lead.
The Trojans finish the season at 3-8-2 and graduate four seniors: Renato Arias, Jorge Lopez, Javier Lopez, and Juan Munoz Hernandez.
St. Joseph (11-3-1) advances to Monday’s 5:30 p.m. semifinal hosted by Vicksburg and will face the winner of Friday’s Vicksburg versus Niles match.
