A number of area soccer teams started began postseason play with first round district games on Wednesday and Thursday.
DIVISION 1 – DISTRICT 3
(At Portage Northern)
Portage Northern 2, Loy Norrix 1
The Huskies avenged an earlier 3-1 defeat to the Knights despite Loy Norrix getting double the shots on goal and nearly triple the overall opportunities. Portage Northern sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Hartman was a huge factor, unofficially making 10 saves in the victory.
Portage Northern opened scoring in the 13th minute on their first shot attempt of the match by junior Gracie Poulsen. The Knights matched in the 19th minute via sophomore Malin Nordmoe. Less than two minutes later, the Huskies reclaimed the lead as senior Katelyn Cook found the upper corner of the net on a shot from near the Loy Norrix bench.
The closest the Knights came to tying the match was midway through the second half when a perfect through-ball from Julia Labadie setup a breakaway try for Nordmoe. Nordmoe went into the box and tried to dribble around a charging Hartman, but the Husky goalkeeper was able to dive on top of the ball and deny the try.
Loy Norrix finishes the season at 8-8-0. Portage Northern improves to 8-9-2 and advances to the 7 p.m. semifinal Tuesday against the host Lakeview. The Huskies defeated the Spartans 3-0 in April, but fell to them 1-0 last week.

St. Joseph 4, Sturgis 1
An early goal had the Trojans playing from behind for 79 of 80 minutes as St. Joseph defeated Sturgis 4-1 at Dickinson Stadium in St. Joseph
St. Joseph struck first just 24 seconds into the contest as Elle Pavlopoulous got a pass from Megan Corbe to give the host school a 1-0 lead. The Bears found the scoreboard just before the 10 minute mark of the first half as Mikayla Ball scored at 9:40 with an assist to MacKenzie Hoecherl.
But that was all the Bears could muster for the rest of the half despite playing on the Sturgis side of the field. Trojans goalkeeper Rylee Wanamaker stopped five of the Bears seven shots to keep her team in the game.
St. Joe would take a 3-0 lead in the 49th minute when Ball found the back of the net again, with Corbe gaining another assist. Sturgis had a couple of scoring chances in the second half, but still were without a shot on goal.
St. Joe would expand the lead to 4-0 just before the 60 minute mark, when Ball returned the favor and assisted on a goal from Corbe.
Sturgis would finally break the shutout when Hope Ogg scored an unassisted goal on a free kick from just outside the penalty area to put the Trojans on the scoreboard and the shot column.
St. Joseph improves to 11-3-2 on the season and Sturgis concludes the season at 5-11-0. The Bears move on to meet Niles.
