A Constantine wrestling team that didn’t have the luxury of depth like teams in the past still can hold its head high after a run to the Division 4 regional finals.
After knocking off Homer 62-13 in the semifinals Wednesday, Constantine was overpowered by host Springport 55-20 in the championship match.
Cody Scarberry (119 pounds), Andres Montoya (145), Daniel Waterman (171) and Andrew Cocanower (285) each picked up a pair of victories for the Falcons, which finished the season with a 25-3 record.
Head coach Steve Wilson was forced to alter his lineup for the finals due to injuries to Andy Waterman (152) and Nick West (160), but Wilson explained that it really had no effect on the outcome against a strong Springport group.
“Springport is very good,” he said. “They’re tough, strong and well coached. The kids’ effort was outstanding; we hung in there in some matches and I’m very proud of them — very proud.”
Daniel and Randy Waterman, Alex Miller, Cocanower and Montoya will all compete at individual regionals Saturday. For the rest of the Falcons, especially the seniors that removed their headgear for the final time, four straight trips to the regional finals is a tremendous accomplishment.
“A lot of people counted you out,” Wilson said. “They worked their butts off. I hope years from now they’ll be able to tell people they wrestled in a regional final. This group of seniors, they will have been to the [Battle Creek] twice and regional finals twice. Not bad.”
