Constantine was defeated in Saturday’s MHSAA Division 3 team wrestling semifinal 59-16 by Dundee. The Vikings went on to defeat Whitehall 60-18 in the final to continue their dynasty, as Dundee has now won six straight state championships.
The day started great for the Falcons as they won their first three matches. Beginning at 190 pounds, Troy Demas scored four points with a 13-3 major decision. At 215, Gregg Reed earned a fall and at 285, Bennett VandenBerg secured a fall. Constantine had the first 16 points of the match, but Dundee would pick up the remaining 59.
At 106 and 113, Cohen Osborne and Jace Vavul were pinned. Preston Like was defeated at 120 by technical fall, followed by three straight pinfall losses by Bear Geibe, Logan Kee, and Collin Featherstone. Michael Featherstone was downed by technical fall at 144. Brody Jones at 150 was closer with a 9-4 decision defeat. From there, it was a technical fall against Carter Godfrey, fall against Dathan Smith, and technical fall against Julian Hawthorne for the 59-16 final.
Still, there’s certainly no shame in falling to a dynasty like Dundee. It was Constantine’s first visit to the final four since 2003. The Falcons aren’t done yet with five headed to the individual state final next weekend at Ford Field. Making the trip are their three winners from Saturday; Troy Demas, Bennett VandenBerg, and Gregg Reed; plus Bear Geibe and Brody Jones.
