Both Constantine and Mendon wrestling showed well at Saturday’s talent-loaded Bangor Invitational, with the Falcons taking third place and the Hornets finishing seventh.
Decatur and Bangor were first and second, respectively. Constantine weighed in with seven individual placers, including Andres Montoya’s championship at 145 pounds.
No time was reported, but Montoya beat Mendon’s Matt Noel in the finals by pin. Montoya, ranked No. 7 in his weight class in Division 4 by MichiganGrappler.com, is now 21-0 this season.
Taylor Reiff (140) and Andy Waterman (160) both finished second with 3-1 marks.
“We had some very good individual performances, but we need to be more consistent as a team,” Falcons coach Steve Wilson said. “I felt as the tournament went on we didn’t step up like we needed to. We finished in third by 13 points behind Bangor and in reality that’s a difference in just a couple matches that we have to win. We’ll go back to work on Monday and keep trying to improve.”
For Mendon, the highlight was Noel’s marked improvement and another fine outing by Jonah Grimm, who was second at 130 pounds.
“We were extremely happy with the kids’ performance today,” Mendon coach Art Stephenson said. “We only took six kids to the varsity meet and placed seventh out of 16 teams, beating a number of teams we had lost to earlier in the year. Of the kids that placed, Matt Noel especially stood out in his performance, pinning the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds on his way to the finals. This was a big step in Matt’s progression toward an elite competitor.”
