Constantine grabbed a 40-15 home win over Kalamazoo United in week eight, securing a playoff spot in the process. The Falcons will be in the postseason for the 20th time in the last 21 years, whereas the Titans now must win at unbeaten Schoolcraft next week to keep their hopes alive.
Hunter Bacheller scored five touchdowns in the senior night win and diversified his scoring, getting in via rush, reception, and kickoff return. Although total yardage was close to even between the squads, the Falcons made a few key defensive stops and United picked up a few poorly timed penalties.
After punting on their opening drive, the Titans took the momentum with a fumble recovery on the first Falcon drive. On a fourth down, quarterback Christian Bartholomew made it all the way to the endzone with a 30-yard run, giving United a 7-0 lead with 6:20 left in the first quarter.
The Titan lead would last for all of 14 seconds as Bacheller took the ensuing kickoff return 89 yards to the house. A two-point rush by Brayden Clark gave Constantine an 8-7 lead. The Falcon D forced a punt and two turnovers-on-downs for the rest of the first half, while adding an 18-yard TD pass early in the second quarter. Caden Hetmansperger found Bacheller on an 18-yard toss, although a failed two-point try put the score at 14-7 into the intermission.
Constantine started with the ball in the third quarter and drove 64 yards in about five minutes, capping the drive on a 22-yard pass from Hetmansperger to Bacheller. The Falcons forced a three-and-out, then put together another five minute drive, ending this time with an 11-yard Ty Dumm rushing score.
The Constantine offense continued to control the clock when they had the ball, getting two more Bacheller touchdowns on one-yard runs. Bacheller and Nathan Scott each added interceptions defensively. United’s second touchdown came late on a Garrett Warner five-yard run.
With the loss, Kalamazoo United drops to 4-4 and must win in week nine for a chance to sneak into the playoff field at 5-4. It will be easier said than done with a trip to Schoolcraft (8-0), which can be heard live next Friday via JoeInsider.com
Constantine clinches a playoff spot at 6-2 and plays at Delton Kellogg (4-4) in week nine. The SAC Lakeshore standings now sees Schoolcraft in the top spot at 4-0, followed by both the Falcons and Titans at 3-1.
