Constantine and Sturgis squared off in the championship of the Comstock Tournament Saturday, with the Falcons grapplers edging the Trojans 35-32.
In the process, Constantine’s Andres Montoya (145 pounds) earned his 150th career victory and went 5-0 on the day. Taylor Reiff (140) and Andy Waterman (160) were also perfect for the Falcons.
“This was a nice day for our kids,” Constantine coach Steve Wilson said. “We were shorthanded missing three starters and started out very flat, but as the day went on the guys really started wrestling pretty good.
“The championship match with Sturgis was a great one going back and forth the whole match. Last year they just edged us out in the last match so it was nice to get the win. The cool thing is that for two years in a row all of the trophies (1st and 2nd) from this tournament reside in St. Joseph County with us and Sturgis.”
Other than Comstock, Marshall, Reading, Napoleon, Bloomingdale, Lakeview (B) and Cassopolis competed in the tournament.
Alejandro Soto (119), Noah Gleason (125), Luke Carver (152) and Anthony Neal won all five of their matches for Sturgis.
“Overall, the boys performed very well today,” Sturgis coach Bryan Boughton said. “They are beginning to show real mat presence. The final match with Constantine was a real barnburner and came down to the last match. We did void two weight classes to give up twelve points at the bottom end, but Constantine earned the win. Our boys were prepared to take advantage of some situations in a few of the matches. In others, we came up short.”
