Reading’s wrestling team won all five of its matches at Saturday’s Magi Invitational at Colon High School. Colon came away with a 2-3 record, beating Pittsford 35-24 and Union City 42-24.
The Magi lost to Reading 54-22, Homer 37-36 and Parchment 36-24. Freshman Daniel Alva went undefeated for the day at 125 pounds, collecting three pins along the way for Colon.
Alva finished off Pittsford’s Travis Pina in one minute and 30 seconds, Homer’s Bryton Warrens in 25 seconds and a wrestler from Union City in 3:33.
At 189 pounds, the Magi’s Nick Martin finished 4-1 and 215-pounder Kale Shumacher turned in a 4-1 mark.
“I was thrilled with Daniel,” Colon coach Darrin VandendBerg said. “He wrestled in eighth grade and he had a pretty good year, but that was his first year of wrestling. Nowadays you don’t typically see a kid with that little experience. I don’t know what it is; I don’t know how to word it, but he just has this understanding of leverage and how to use his body.
“Nick Martin did a nice job and I think he’s going to have a great year. Kale Schumacher was pretty aggressive and did a nice job.”
Colon is back on the mat Wednesday in a 6 p.m. dual at Parchment.
