Colon won 52-39 at home against Mendon Friday in the District 116 girls basketball championship game. The Magi secure their first district championship since 2002 with the win and guarantee a winning record for the first time in more than a decade.
By halftime, Colon raced out to a 30-18 lead over the defending district champs. Naturally, the Hornets didn’t go down without a fight as they clawed back within six points by the end of the third quarter. That would be as close as the Magi let them get.
Mary Jane Muntain had a huge game with 23 points for Colon. The Magi dominated down low, scoring 43 of their 52 points in the paint. Brenna Fisher scored 14 points and Katie Gentz added 10 rebounds.
Alexis Ames led the Mendon offense with 13 points, followed by 11 from Taylor Heitkamp. The Hornets close with a 6-13 record and graduate just Heitkamp. The rest of their roster were sophomores and freshmen.
Colon moves to 12-10 and meets regional host Martin in Tuesday’s 5:30 p.m. semifinal. The Clippers (21-1) destroyed Zion Christian 47-18 in their district final. The other side of the region features Fruitport Calvary Christian and Michigan Lutheran.
