Colon rallied for a 29-22 win at Morrice in Friday’s eight-player football Division 2 regional championship game. It’s the third regional title in four seasons for the Magi.
It was the third time in that stretch Colon faced the Orioles, beating them in the 2019 state semifinal but falling in the 2018 semi. This time around, the Magi had to erase a two touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter.
The score was 22-8 Orioles entering the fourth quarter. On the first play of the quarter, Simon Vinson hit Justin Wickey on a 17-yard touchdown pass. 63 seconds later, the Magi had the ball back after forcing a fumble and they tied the game with a 77-yard score from Vinson to Wickey.
With 3:40 remaining, Colon had their first lead of the game as Vinson and Wickey connected again, this time on an 18-yard passing score. Wickey finished with 226 yards on eight catches and three touchdowns.
The Magi D held firm once ahead for the 29-22 win. Colon forced a turnover on downs near midfield and drained the clock down to 25 seconds before punting back to the Orioles. The game’s final play had Magi defender Tucker Lafler sacking Morrice QB Wyatt Wesley.
Both teams have a 10-1 record following Friday’s result. Colon will be the road team officially in the semifinal next week against Au Gres-Sims, located on Saginaw Bay. The time and location is to be announced.
