Colon’s 2022 baseball season came to an end in Thursday’s regional semifinal, falling at Decatur 8-1. It was the sixth consecutive regionals appearance for the Magi, who had the tough draw of having to face the Raiders on their field. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but was pushed back a day due to rain.
Decatur was officially the road team on the scoreboard and started off with two runs in the top of the first inning. The Raiders added four more in the third, followed by single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Colon’s lone run came in the bottom of the fifth when Justin Wickey tripled, bringing home Kaleb Bissett. Wickey had two of the five Magi hits. Josh West and Scott Frye both doubled and Bissett had a single.
Maverick Downs was Colon’s starting pitcher and went two innings, allowing four hits, six runs (four earned), with one strikeout and one walk. West pitched the remaining five innings, allowing three hits, two runs (one earned) with nine strikeouts.
Brandon Bruno started for Decatur, striking out seven and allowing one hit over three innings. Landon Rose allowed three hits and the lone Magi run over three innings of relief and Zach Wiggins had one scoreless inning in relief. Bruno led the Raider offense with a triple, double, and single for two RBI and two runs.
Colon closes with a 14-10 record. Decatur improves to 23-8 and plays Whitmore Lake in Saturday’s 12:30 p.m. regional final at Kalamazoo College.
