The White Pigeon volleyball team went 2-3 at the Buchanan Tournament Saturday.
The Chiefs (19-12-1) defeated Three Oaks River Valley, 25-23, 25-16. They fell to Buchanan, 27-25, 17-25, 6-15. White Pigeon defeated Lawton, 25-12, 17-25, 15-9, then fell to Niles Brandywine (26-24, 21-25, 10-15), before wrapping up the tournament with a loss to New Buffalo (18-25, 23-25).
White Pigeon’s Skyler DeMeyer had a total of 90 assists and 36 digs Saturday, while Bethany Hagner had 52 kills and 34 digs and Rachel Brock had a team-best 53 digs.
Chiefs coach Tony Hooley said he liked the intensity and resiliency he saw in his team throughout the tournament.
“The girls played with intensity and purpose in the morning coming back from way down against River Valley to win,” Hooley said. “That carried over to a well-played match against a very tall and good Buchanan team, even though that contest ended in a three-set loss. Then, our play became lethargic and inconsistent to finish out the day.
“It is a little frustrating when you can see what this team is capable of. We just need to find a way to sustain that level of play and reduce the serve-receive and general ball handling errors.”
Hooley said he was very pleased to see his squad compile a high kill percentage “while competing against some good blocking front lines.”
