Centreville volleyball won the final match of Saturday’s quad meet at Dowagiac which also featured Hackett Catholic Prep and Cassopolis. Both the Bulldogs and Chieftains went 3-1 for the day with Centreville winning the finale 2-1 in a rematch against Dowagiac.
All four teams met initially in pool play with Centreville defeating Hackett (23-25, 25-17, 25-12) and Cassopolis (25-15, 25-21), but falling to Dowagiac (25-21, 25-22). The Chieftains went unbeaten in pool play, also defeating the Irish (25-11, 25-16), and Rangers (25-21, 25-16).
“After our first two match wins, I knew we were going to have to respect a good coached Dowagiac team.,” said Centreville head coach Deric Mostrom. “Tony Hooley’s teams always hustle and work hard at keeping the ball alive. In the first match they did that well and kept our offense out of system.”
As the top two pool finishers, the Bulldogs got another shot at Dowagiac to close the evening, winning a tight battle 25-20, 22-25, 26-24.
“We were able to come back in the second match for the playoff championship and start out with a strong start, which pushed us through set one,” said Mostrom. “After a 4-9 start in the second set, we started to clean things up and keep pushing, but were just a little behind and could not catch up. In the third set though, we didn’t let the long runs happen and we had a pretty consistent final set.”
“Big picture, I was very happy with how the girls kept fighting throughout the day to finish the day on top,” added Mostrom. “It would have been easy for the girls to give up, many times during the day. But I am glad they kept pushing after a very long week of volleyball, having four days of competition.”
The Bulldogs have a 7-4 overall record following Saturday’s results and return to Southwest 10 Conference action next week hosting Bloomingdale Tuesday and traveling to Marcellus Thursday.
