The Centreville volleyball team went 2-2 at the Union City Invitational Saturday. The Bulldogs took second place in their pool with a 25-25, 25-20 win over Battle Creek Central, a 25-20, 25-18 victory over Jackson Christian and a 17-25, 12-25 loss to Union City.
Reading topped Centerville in the first round of bracket play 19-25, 17-25.
We were in the roller coaster of volleyball today,” coach Melissa Gales said. “At times we played great and other times we just beat ourselves. When we have games where we serve above 90 percent, we have better attacks and just all around intensity. Giving up the easy points kills us and our momentum. We are still finding ways to all improve our games individually and in the long run this will make us a better, stronger team.
Sam Lewis and Tearra Pratt served up five aces apiece, Madison Hunter guided the offense with 34 assists, Mattie Kirby and Bailee May recorded 19 and 14 kills, respectively, and Kirby also led the team with 31 digs. Charity Yeager (26 digs), Lewis (19 digs), Becky Clementz (21 digs) and May (22) digs also made strong contributions defensively. May added three assisted blocks and a solo stop.
“We have this week off from games and can just work on both individual and team skills to prepare us for Mendon a week,” Gales said.
