Centreville defeated Marcellus 44-38 in Monday’s District 80 first round girls basketball contest at White Pigeon.
The Bulldogs had an eight-point lead heading into halftime, but the Wildcats closed the gap by the end of the third quarter. Centreville was able to pull back ahead in the fourth, aided by a strong 17-23 night at the free throw line, including 8-10 in the final frame.
“Tonight was a hard-fought battle on both ends of the floor for both teams,” said Bulldogs coach Jill Peterson. “We trailed 34-36 with just over five minutes to go and finished the game on a 10-2 run with clutch free throws. I’m proud of the girls for their effort tonight and their support of each other.”
Marcellus senior Rachel Mihills led all players with 17 points in her final outing. The Wildcats finish the season at 7-9. Faith Edwards led Centreville with 13 points.
The Bulldogs improve to 7-2 and face Bronson (11-3) in Wednesday’s 7 p.m. semifinal from White Pigeon. The other side of the bracket has the hosting Chiefs against Schoolcraft.
