Niles Brandywine ran away with the Centreville Preseason Tournament championship Wednesday with a 60-23 victory over the host Bulldogs in girls basketball action.
Jumping out to a 17-5 lead in the first quarter and a 37-9 advantage at halftime, Niles Brandywine, which advanced to the Class C state quarterfinals last season, cruised the rest of the way and improved to 2-0 on the season.
Mattie Kirby led Centreville (1-1) with eight points and finished with two rebounds and two assists. Bailee May, Madison Hunter and Jenna Beeker each notched three points. Faith Morell had a team-high four rebounds.
“The team fought hard tonight against a tough Brandywine crew,” Centreville coach Jill Peterson said. “Coach Hood has a well established program and system in place. I’m proud of the way the girls handled themselves in the intense contest and we’ll move forward from here.”
