Centreville baseball won at Colon 6-4 on a cold and rainy Wednesday afternoon for their first victory of the season. The Bulldogs struggled initially, giving up three runs in the first two innings due to walks and fielding errors. Centreville didn’t take the lead until the sixth inning.
Hunter Hutchinson was solid in relief, allowing only one run over innings three to six for the Bulldogs. Centreville used two hits and an error to tie the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning. In the sixth, Trae Martin’s RBI triple brought home Derek Gleaton for the lead. A wild pitch brought in Martin for a 5-3 score.
Colon got a run back in the bottom of the sixth with an Austin Stoll RBI double, bringing home Matthew Bissett. The Magi had runners at second and third with one out, but a strikeout and diving catch from left fielder Seth Chiddister kept Centreville ahead by one.
The Bulldogs added one insurance run in the seventh on another Martin RBI. Colon started the bottom of the seventh with a hit batsman and single. However, one runner was caught stealing at third, followed by two strikeouts by Jacob Spencer for the save.
Martin finished with three hits, two RBI, and two runs for Centreville. Colon saw three hits, one run, and one walk from Brendan Barkman. Bissett allowed three runs in the first four innings, followed by three runs against Andrew Smolarz. The second scheduled game never began due to worsening weather and light.
Centreville moves to 1-2 with the win and has their third straight day of games ahead with Thursday’s home opener against Quincy. Colon drops to 1-3 and returns to action in Saturday’s mini tournament at Martin.
