Burr Oak hit the road Thursday night for a Southern Central Athletic Association volleyball tilt with Colon and left Magic City with a 3-0 win. The Bobcats claimed 25-24, 26-24, 25-17 wins to improve to 10-4 overall this year.
Coach Kris Owens called the league clash a “key game” for Burr Oak, the kind of signature victory in a season that tops off a team’s tank moving forward.
“I am hoping it boosted my players’ confidence to carry them through the season with all the intensity they need to play every point like it’s match point,” Owens said. “The energy in the gymnasium from our crowd was palpable. The girls were able to come back in the second set from a five-point deficit, with Colon sitting on match point, to win the set. Jade Summey served six in a row under intense pressure, which gave her teammates the confidence they needed to go strong into set three.”
Michaela Ultz (19 total points) served eight straight points in the third set to break Colon’s back. She added seven solo blocks on a night when she also recorded an ace, four kills and two digs. Sydney Owens (14 points) posted a team-high 13 kills from a variety of spots on the floor, a block and 10 digs.
Brooke Cooper posted eight assists and a dig, Jade Lown had seven digs and 11 points, Chelsey Boyd chipped in nine points, an ace, one block and three digs and Summey posted 16 points, four aces, six kills, two blocks and seven digs.
“Best showing of the season,” Owens said.
Colon’s individual statistics were not reported Thursday night.
