Portland St. Patrick did most of its damage in the first and third quarters to pick up a 47-36 win Friday night at Burr Oak in a Southern Michigan 8-Man Football League affair.
A 24-point outpouring in the opening frame and scored 15 unanswered coming out of halftime to put the game out of reach and send the Bobcats (3-2) to their second consecutive defeat.
Chantz Owens ran for a 15-yard touchdown and caught an 80-yard scoring pass from quarterback James Saylor in the first quarter. Saylor hit Arturo Hernandez-Gonzalez for an 11-yard TD and ran for a short score in the second stanza. Alex Munoz bolted 15 yards to the end zone and Saylor added a 50-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
“Overall, I was very pleased with the way the boys came out and played with emotion and intensity all night long,” Burr Oak coach Ryan Stephens said. “We played four quarters off football this week rather than getting down on ourselves. Minus a few mistakes with our pass coverage in the first half, the Bobcats are heading in the right direction.
“We plan to learn from our mistakes and get better week by week to make a playoff run come late October. Overall, the Bobcats are playing tougher every game and are learning to play through adversity which was clearly evident in their late comeback tonight against St. Patrick.”
Owens finished with two catches for 99 yards to go along with his 13 carries for 246 rushing yards, Hunter Dobberteen recorded three receptions for 67 yards and Munoz contributed 69 rushing yards. Saylor completed 10 of 20 passing attempts for 207 yards with one interception.
Brent Everitt posted a team-best 13 tackles, Owens finished with 11 and Hernandez-Gonzalez, Munoz and Saylor each had 10.
