The boys from Burr Oak traveled to Jackson Christian Thursday to open the 2013-14 basketball season and left with a 61-44 victory.
Shooting 50 percent from the field (23-for-46) and grabbing 20 defensive rebounds as a team, the Bobcats started both halves strong, outscoring the home team 20-15 in the opening quarter and 18-11 in the third stanza.
Kenny Walston scored 15 points and had six rebounds and five steals to lead Burr Oak, followed by Chantz Owens (12 points, two steal), Logan Mount (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Brent Everitt (two points, seven boards).
“We played a good defensive game tonight,” said head coach Dave Brackett after his team held Jackson Christian to 15-for-39 shooting. “That’s what made this win possible. We pressured their guards all night and kept them out of rhythm. We kept them off the boards all night and didn’t give up a lot of second-chance points. This is the start we were looking for from this team. Now we have to get back to work and prepare for the next game Monday against Tekonsha.”
Samuel Sukta and Max Walz finished with 20 and 12 points, respectively for Jackson Christian, which fell to 0-2.
