The Hornets and Comets start Saturday’s festivities bright and early at 10 a.m. ET from the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. It’s a rematch of last year’s championship with saw Mendon sweeping Leland for their fifth volleyball state title. The Comets have won three state titles and taken runner-up thrice.
Top-ranked Mendon sits at 39-9-6 overall after surviving a five-set semifinal battle with fourth-ranked Southfield Christian. The Hornets downed second-ranked Camden-Frontier 3-1 in the quarterfinal and third-ranked St. Philip in the regional final.
Fifth-ranked Leland is 44-14-3 after their semifinal sweep Thursday against Rudyard. The Comets swept sixth-ranked Merrill in their quarterfinal Tuesday and took regional wins over Traverse City Christian and Bellaire.
Following that match, Schoolcraft and St. Mary play for the D3 crown with first serve around noon. The Eagles are the top-ranked team at 47-6-1, hoping for their second state title in three appearances. They fell in their last finals appearance to the Kestrels in 2014.
Schoolcraft swept Valley Lutheran in Friday’s semifinal, keeping the Eagles unbeaten against D3 foes. Second-ranked St. Mary (49-2) swept Rudyard in their semifinal.
