Thursday’s match is a state finals-caliber contest with the defending state champion and top-ranked Hornets against the third-ranked Fighting Tigers. Mendon defeated St. Philip 3-1 in last season’s regional final and swept them in the 2016 district final. The Tigers knocked out the Hornets in the 2015 state quarterfinal en route to a runner-up finish. 2015 was St. Philip’s 29th and most recent state championship appearance.
Both teams earned sweeps in their Tuesday semifinals with Mendon defeating New Buffalo and St. Philip downing Muskegon Catholic Central. The Hornets are 36-9-6 and rolled through their district foes of Climax-Scotts, Heritage Christian, and Howardsville Christian. The Fighting Tigers are 47-10 and dispatched Martin, Tri-unity Christian, and Zion Christian in their district matches.
