Listen live online Friday via JoeInsider.com as Cassopolis travels to Reading in a Division 8 football district championship game.
Cassopolis (10-0) comes in looking to win their fifth straight district title and finally break through to the state final after falling in the Division 7 semifinals in 2018 and 2016. Meanwhile, Reading (9-1) is the defending D8 state champ with aspirations to do it again, ranked first in the final Associated Press D8 poll.
Both teams have been dominant throughout their 2019 campaigns. The stingy Cassopolis defense has allowed only 17 points for the entire season with eight shutouts. Their closest results were week three against Centreville (15-0) and week five against Decatur (33-11). Their offense is also averaging 40.3 points per game.
Reading dropped their season opener to D7 powerhouse and still unbeaten Pewamo-Westphalia 14-0 in week one. Since then, they’ve outscored their foes 449-52 with every win by 30+ points.
Cassopolis opened the postseason with a 41-0 beating of Southwest 10 rival White Pigeon. Reading also began their playoffs against a Southwest 10 squad, blanking Mendon 38-0. The Hornets are the lone mutual opponent between both pairs of Rangers, as Cassopolis topped them 28-0 in week two.
Friday’s contest will be the second-ever gridiron contest between Cassopolis and Reading. Cassopolis picked up a 31-16 home win in the 2017 district final.
