Howardsville Christian won a dramatic 57-54 double overtime decision against Kalamazoo Lakeside Academy to open boys basketball District 116 at Mendon.
The game stayed within two possessions the entire way with 14 lead changes and 13 tied scores. The game saw a tie at halftime (26-26), at the end of the third (40-40) and to close regulation (46-46). It was then 51-51 after the first OT.
The final lead chance came with 21 seconds left in the second overtime via Josh Parks for a 55-54 lead. Lakeside missed a three-pointer with seven seconds left, followed by an Eagle rebound and Titan foul. Josiah Rose made both bonus free throws for a three-point lead and Lakeside turned the ball over on their last hope.
“Tough fought battle to the end, back and forth all game,” noted HCS coach Justin Jergens. “Props to Kalamazoo Lakeside for their effort and great season!”
Rose finished with a game-high 16 points. Parks finished with 13 points, nine rebounds, and five assists.
“Very proud of my boys for digging deep and pulling it out,” added Jergens. “They did whatever it took to win, collective team effort.”
Howardsville Christian improves to 11-9 with the win and faces Burr Oak in the 5:30 p.m. district semifinal Wednesday from Mendon. Lakeside finishes the season at 6-5. On the other side of the bracket, the Hornets host Colon. The Magi were a 60-40 winner in their first round game over Athens.
