Three Rivers outraced Sturgis to an 81-79 boys basketball win at Sturgis Thursday evening. Fans were treated to offensive output rarely seen at the high school level with a combined 18 three-pointers, 30 two-pointers, and 46 free throws between the two squads.
For the Wildcats, it was their second-highest output of the season, one behind their 82-56 point win over Berrien Springs. For the Trojans, it was their highest tally despite being in defeat. It was also the most allowed by both teams this season.
Parker Ellifritz topped TR with 34 points, hitting six triples along with a 10-12 mark at the foul line. Thomas Kurowski led all players with 40 points for Sturgis, including a 20-25 free throw line. Kurowski fell three points shy of matching the school record he co-holds. The MHSAA record book also has him as only the 20th boys player to make 20 free throws in a game.
Three Rivers started strong with a 23-8 lead early in the first quarter. By halftime, the Wildcat lead was whittled down to only three. They would continue to go back-and-forth down to the conclusion.
The Wildcats have back-to-back wins and now sit at 6-9 overall. It also avenges the home loss TR saw to Sturgis back in January. The Trojans move to 7-8 with the defeat. In the Wolverine Conference South Division standings, Vicksburg has the slight edge on third place at eight points, followed by Sturgis at seven and TR at five.
Three Rivers returns to action at home Monday against Portage Central, which you can hear live via JoeInsider.com. The Trojans are back at it Tuesday with a trip to Mattawan.
