Sturgis senior Peyton Boughton added more hardware to her collection Saturday by winning the home Kiwanis Invitational in 19 minutes, 47.10 seconds. The medalist time was enough to boost the girls cross country team to a fifth-place finish.
Finishing second to Detroit Catholic Central, the Sturgis boys cross country team collected 42 points and a trio of top-10 performances. Grant Brown led the Trojans with a fifth-place time of 16 minutes, 49 seconds. Terry Stahl (seventh) posted a lifetime best (16:51.90) and Shawn Bell was eighth in 16:55.20.
“Trever Sprowls also had a lifetime best at 17:09,” Sturgis coach Emerson Green said. “We are getting closer to our state meet performance of last year when we got four athletes under 17 minutes. This year’s goal is five under 17. Daniel Steele is progressing nicely to return to sub-17 and is running [as] fifth man so far during his recovery from the ankle injury suffered at Dowagiac Invitational. Daniel Tetzloff has improved his time to 18:29 and looks to crack into the varsity for next weeks SMAC championship race at Lakeview.
“Andrea Hernandez Garcia (22:55) and Emma Robertson (23:22) had lifetime best times for the Trojans. Valeria Garcia Luna and Jennifer Jurardo had lifetime best runs during the JV race.”
