Burr Oak’s volleyball team pushed Class D’s No. 5-ranked squad to the limit in the first match of a doubleheader Thursday in the Bobcats’ gym. Hillsdale Academy escaped with a 26-24, 26-24 victory in the first match and pulled away in the second for a 25-19, 25-13 win.
“We had two fairly decent leads in both sets of match one,” Burr Oak coach Kris Owens said, but Hillsdale is a well-disciplined team and knew where to place the ball when it mattered most.”
Brooke Cooper scored 12 points, one ace and 20 assists, while Michaela Ultz registered nine points, 11 kills, two blocks and six digs. Sydney Owens had 16 points, five kills, a block and three digs. Jade Lown added five points and five digs, Madi Adams posted six points and six digs and Chelsey Boyd finished with 16 points, two aces, four kills and 22 digs. Jade Summey rounded out the score sheet with 16 points, three aces, four kills, four blocks and nine digs.
“All in all, I am happy with the progress we have made this year,” Owens said. “To be effective in districts we need to focus on some more offensive plays, and get a couple of my defensive positions better placed behind blockers.”
