The Blades of Southwest Michigan dropped a 3-2 result Saturday evening at Wings West to Gilmour Academy. It was the Blades’ second game of the day and like their defeat to 3-2 Valpo in the afternoon, it was a final minute goal that doomed them.
With 29 seconds remaining, GA’s Charlie Tuggey stole the puck and scored on a shorthanded breakaway for the 3-2 win. The Lancers were in the penalty box double the time as the Blades, which led to two powerplay second period goals by Schoolcraft’s Parker Lawrence and Comstock’s Owen Drake. Those goals erased a 2-0 hole as Gilmour had an Anthony Iacobell powerplay score and Kessel Richards shorthanded goal both late in the first period.
Unofficially, Vicksburg’s Jack Tomer made 29 saves in defeat for the Blades. Gilmour’s Tobias Herlong turned away 21 as the Lancers won their season debut.
The Blades drop to 6-10-0 and get another crack at the Lancers with a Sunday matinee rematch from Wings West at 12 p.m. noon E.T.
