The Kalamazoo Central girls are now the only unbeaten team in SMAC East divisional play after Friday’s 82-54 win at Gull Lake. It was the highest-scoring game this season for the Maroon Giants, who sank 11 three-pointers and put up 27 points in the second quarter and another 28 in the fourth.
The Blue Devils traded the lead with K-Central four times initially with the Maroon Giants holding an 11-10 lead by the end of the first quarter. KC had an 18-10 run in the first five minutes of the second quarter, followed by a 9-0 run to close the half ahead 38-20.
Gull Lake still had some life entering the fourth quarter, trailing 54-39. Any comeback aspirations were squashed quickly by K-Central senior Jayla Gill, who scored 11 points within the first two minutes of the fourth. Gill was one of five Giants to score double-digit points, with her and Nia’Jah Williams both getting 16. Morasha Wiggins led the Giants with 21 and Avery Cook’s 15 paced the Blue Devils.
Kalamazoo Central improves to 6-4 overall and 4-0 in the SMAC East. They’ll host East Lansing Tuesday. Gull Lake drops to 5-2 and 2-1 in divisional play. The Blue Devils welcome Three Rivers to Richland Tuesday.
