Listen live Friday evening online via JoeInsider.com as the Kalamazoo Christian Comets host the Hackett Catholic Irish in boys and girls varsity basketball. The girls varsity is first around 6 p.m. ET with the boys to follow around 7:45. It is a pivotal early January battle between SAC Valley, district, and crosstown rivals.
Both boys teams enter the evening unbeaten with Kalamazoo Christian at 6-0 and Hackett at 8-0. The Comets are 3-0 within the SAC Valley on wins over Schoolcraft, Constantine, and Galesburg-Augusta. On Tuesday, they defeated Brandywine in Niles 51-41. Kalamazoo Christian is averaging 60.2 points per game and allowing 40.8.
Hackett is 4-0 within the SAC Valley, defeating Schoolcraft, Lawton, Delton Kellogg, and Galesburg-Augusta. The Irish raced to a 90-53 win at Comstock Tuesday. Hackett is averaging 70.7 points per game and allowing 48.5 thus far.
Last season, the Irish claimed both regular season meetings over K-Christian, 53-50 on the road and 52-46 at home in overtime. However, the Comets took the district postseason game 48-37, en route to a state quarterfinal run. Once again for both squads, a deep postseason run will almost certainly require a win over their crosstown rival.
In the girls contest, Kalamazoo Christian comes in at 4-2 and 2-1 within the SAC Valley. Both of their defeats came against very tough squads, falling to unbeaten Schoolcraft 62-42 in December and at 7-1 Brandywine Tuesday, 39-36 in overtime. They’re scoring 46.2 points per game and allowing 38.
The Hackett girls enter at 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the SAC Valley. Like the Comets, the losses for the Irish came against very strong opposition. Their last two games were defeats to unbeaten Schoolcraft 41-28 last Friday and to 8-1 Comstock Tuesday, 49-36. Hackett is averaging 39.2 points per game and allowing 42.3.
Hackett defeated Kalamazoo Christian in all three meetings last season, including a 44-33 final in the district tournament. The Irish have won the last seven girls meetings over the Comets with the last K-Christian win in February 2014.
