Listen live online Tuesday evening via JoeInsider.com as Schoolcraft faces Montague in a Division 3 baseball quarterfinal contest at 5:30 p.m. ET from Davenport University in Grand Rapids.
The Eagles sit at 19-11 entering their third consecutive quarterfinal appearance. The 2018 squad is significantly different from the team that got them to their first-ever semifinal berth last year, with only one player who saw action in last year’s quarterfinal back for this year.
After some early growing pains, Schoolcraft is heating up at the right time. The Eagles emphatically won their regional final Sunday in three innings 15-0 over Coloma. The prior regional semifinal was even 4-4 with host Buchanan Saturday when it was suspended due to weather and moved to Stevensville Lakeshore. Schoolcraft scored twice in the seventh inning when play resumed for a 6-4 win. In their district tournament games, the Eagles defeated Lawton 10-0 and Comstock 7-1.
For Montague, they come into Tuesday at 24-12 fresh off their first-ever regional title. The Wildcats boast a very young squad with only one senior and like Schoolcraft, are peaking at the right time. Montague smacked Delton Kellogg 11-0 to open regional play Saturday, followed by a 7-3 win over NorthPointe Christian in the final. The Wildcats claimed district victories over North Muskegon 5-1 and Shelby 13-0.
Tuesday’s winner advances to the state semifinal from Michigan State University Friday at 5 p.m. against either Gabriel Richard or Michigan Center.
