The annual Kalamazoo City Championship baseball tournament took place Saturday with Kalamazoo Central and Kalamazoo Christian playing host to games with themselves, Hackett Catholic, and Loy Norrix. The Irish ended up taking the top honors with a semifinal win over the Maroon Giants and a championship win over the Comets.
The Irish jumped out to an initial 3-0 lead after the second inning, then extended it in the fourth on a three-run Stephen Kwapis home run. Sam Shea struck out seven with seven hits allowed and only one earned run over a complete game win.
The Comets and Knights traded runs leading to extra innings in their semifinal. In the bottom of the ninth, Roscoe Wallace hit a walk-off RBI single to score Wyatt Steensma. Parker Remelius led LN in defeat with three hits and two RBI.
The Maroon Giants beat their SMAC foe with a five-run second inning giving them control. Ben Vanderberg allowed only one run and five hits over a five inning start and added two hits offensively.
The SAC rivals traded runs early with a 6-5 Comet lead after the fourth inning. Chris Bullard entered the fifth in relief for the Irish and pitched three perfect innings to prevent any future K-Christian scoring. Hackett’s Sam Shea had four hits and three RBI. Isaac Backman had three hits, two walks, two runs, and one RBI.
Hackett improves to 11-7 with Saturday’s victories and hosts Gobles Monday. Kalamazoo Christian (10-7-1) hosts Watervliet Monday. Kalamazoo Central (9-13) travels to SMAC rival Lakeview Thursday. Loy Norrix (4-10) hosts St. Joseph Monday.
