Hackett Catholic Prep won their home and season debut Friday in a wild 79-67 affair against Coloma. The Irish saw 38 points and double-digit rebounds from senior Heath Baldwin. Zach Goodline was close behind with 37 points for the Comets.
Baldwin scored 11 within the first 4:19 for a quick 18-7 Hackett lead, with the Irish staying ahead for the entire game. Hackett’s lead extended to 24-11 by the end of the first quarter and grew as large as 20 points before settling on a 44-27 halftime margin. PJ Caldwell drained a deep three at the buzzer to give the Comets a little boost heading into the locker room.
Fouls were a regular fixture in the game with 41 total between the two squads. Coloma was down nine at the end of the third quarter at 59-50 and made it as close as seven. Foul woes really dinged the Comets with Hackett reaching the double bonus before the third quarter’s completion. The Irish were 20-32 from the free throw line with Coloma going 14-21.
Behind Baldwin for Hackett in scoring was Aidan Gillig with 16 points. Next for the Comets after Goodline was Caldwell’s 13. Unlike last season’s home-and-home series, this game will be their only meeting against each other.
Coloma falls to 0-2, joining a tight loss Tuesday to Portage Northern. They’ll return to action at Buchanan Tuesday. Hackett begins at 1-0 and has a lengthy layoff ahead, not playing again until Tuesday, November 11 at home versus Watervliet.
