The varsity baseball players from Sturgis and Marshall enjoyed a particularly memorable season opener Monday with a full day of activities on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. The squads toured the institution before playing a non-league doubleheader to start the 2018 campaign.
Sturgis won the first game 2-1 after Tony Harper drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning, plating Korbin Whitcomb, who scored both Trojan runs. Whitcomb, who missed a large chunk of the football season with a knee injury, which required surgery and rehab, led Sturgis with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. Jake Abbs, Drew Murphy and Zach Chapman also singled.
Isaac Harper got the win with two innings of work to close out the game. He allowed two hits, one run and struck out two Marshall batters. Sam Leck started and tossed two innings of hitless ball with four strikeouts, and Abbs threw three inning with only one hit allowed and two strikeouts. The trio combined for seven walks.
Sturgis scored its only run in the first inning of Game 2, which Marshall won 6-1. The Redhawks plated two runs in the third, three in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Brayden Bathgate had two hits for Sturgis and Brecken Stewart added a single and RBI.
Stewart took the loss after three innings of work, which yielded no hits and three strikeouts. Murphy threw two innings with two hits allowed and four Ks, and Brian Jordan pitched the final two innings with no hits surrendered. The Trojans walked 10 batters.
