Union City limited host Colon to nine points in the first half Tuesday to open the 2017-18 girls varsity basketball season with a 37-26 victory.
Brooke Hinkley led the Magi with 10 points and she also registered five rebounds, two assists and two blocks in the loss. Brenna Fisher had five points, Christin Hicks scored four, Keagan Bower and Meagon Persing both finished with three and Rebekah Scofield had two.
Persing paced the team with nine rebounds, Fisher grabbed seven, Mary Jane Muntian added three and Bower secured two. Fisher led the squad with four assists, six steals and four blocks.
“I think we came out a little flat; it took our girls a little to get comfortable,” Colon coach Robbie Hattan said. “We had 18 shots in the first half, that isn’t acceptable for us. We did much better in the second half as we put up 32 shots. In order for us to win games like this we need to make the easy layups and put backs and be more efficient at the free throw line. Overall it was a step in the right direction and we got the first game out of the way.”
