Falling behind by eight points in the second quarter, the Mendon varsity girls basketball team couldn’t quite close the gap in Friday’s season opener at home and lost to Union City 38-35.
Autumn Carpenter led the Chargers (2-0) with 15 points, which included a nine-point fourth quarter. Union City outscored the Hornets 13-5 in the second period for a 21-13 halftime cushion.
Mendon’s Hayley Kramer led all scorers with a 17-point night, Mackenzie Urich posted seven points and Taylor Heitkamp chipped in six. Both Makenzie Oatley and Hannah Duchene scored two points, while Cierra Nightingale hit a foul shot.
Kramer pulled down a team-best 11 rebounds to go with three steals and two assists. Duchene had five boards, Amaijha Bailey recorded four boards and four steals, and Nicole Parsons, Urich and Heitkamp all finished with three rebounds.
