Three Rivers finally had some shots fall in the second half Friday to claim a 40-21 Wolverine Conference varsity girls basketball victory at Sturgis.
An offensively-deprived first half for both squads resulted in a 9-9 halftime score.
“We struggled tonight at the offensive end but did a great job defensively until we started to finish,” Three Rivers coach Jason Bingaman said. “We were 6-of-35 shooting through three quarters. Give credit to Sturgis; they did a nice job defensively.
“Proud of the girls for sticking to our plan defensively and staying positive until we were able to get some transition buckets. Kali Heivilin did a great job on the boards and we made good decisions with the ball to finish the game.”
Hadley Miller scored 12 points to lead Three Rivers, and Heivilin finished with eight points, 12 rebounds and a steal.
De’Ashia Sanders led Sturgis with 11 points.
“Defensively, we had a good game strategy to not let Miller get looks at the basket,” Sturgis coach Amie Burger said. “Lindsay Kiss and Madisyn Wanamaker did a great job of guarding her tonight. Once Baleigh went out with an ankle injury we struggled to keep everything together. Baleigh is that gel for us. We are going to have to find someone to step up and take over that role while she takes time off to get healthy again.”
