The youth of the Sturgis Stingrays swim program participated in the YMCA Midwest Regional Swim Meet last weekend at the University of Minnesota. The meet featured over 80 swim teams from several Midwestern states. The Stingrays had fourteen different swimmers qualify for the event with 8 making the trip to Minneapolis.
Competing for the girls in the 8 & under division were Ainsley Gump and Ava Albarran. Kaylee Draper, Mia Albarran, Emma Garbine and Hannah Garbine represented the Stingrays in the Girl’s 9-10 division. Breana Hagerty competed in the Girl’s 11-12 division and Wyatt Sand was the lone boy to make the trip competing in the Boy’s 11-12 division.
The girls scored 47 points and finished in 38th place. Draper led the team with 21 points and had a team high finish of 8thplace in the 500 yard freestyle in a time of 6:59.70 and a 9thplace finish in the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 2:35.52. Hannah Garbine also achieved a 9thplace finish in the 50 yard backstroke with a time of 35.59.
Also achieving a top 10 finish was the 200 yard freestyle relay team of Draper, Mia Albarran, Hannah Garbine and Emma Garbine. The team broke the Stingray’s team record in the same event earlier in the season.
The girls also achieved several personal best times for the weekend including one personal best each for Ava Albarran and Draper. Ainsley Gump and Hannah Garbine each achieved three personal best times over the weekend.
Sand also scored a point with a 16thplace finish in the 50 yard butterfly. Sand’s time of 32.41 seconds in the 50 yard butterfly was also a personal best.
The Regional Meet represents the end of the Winter season for the Stingrays. The season began with 75 youth swimmers ranging in age from 6 to 18. Practices are held throughout the week with competitions either home or out of town on most weekends. The team will now take several weeks off before the Summer season begins in May.
