Sturgis build a two-goal cushion by halftime and went on to beat Dowagiac 4-1 Monday night in a Wolverine Conference home match.
Lindsay Kiss buried a shot in the back of the net with 13 minutes and 14 seconds remaining in the opening period before Sage Groves gave the Trojans their second goal at the 6:33 mark that was assisted by Cassie Herman.
Groves made it a 3-0 contest a little over 12 minutes into the second half and Jessica Gonzalez had an assist on the goal. Kellyn Daly booted in a free kick from 24 yards to put Dowagiac on the board 10 minutes later, but it was all the Chieftains would muster.
Maddi Allan put the final goal in for Sturgis at 6:54 on a penalty kick.
“A very nice team effort,” Sturgis coach Tom Summerfield said. “There was good passing combinations and unselfish teamwork displayed. The whole team’s defensive efforts limited the opponent’s opportunities for attempts on goal.”
Kenzie Cain stopped two shots in the first half for the Trojans. Grace Younger finished with 21 saves on a busy night guarding the goal for Dowagiac. Sturgis registered 11 corner kicks.
The Trojans improved to 4-7-3 and Dowagiac slipped to 3-10.
