Baleigh Brazo’s clutch free throw in overtime Tuesday night proved to be the difference for the Sturgis girls basketball team in a 49-48, overtime victory over visiting Constantine.
Brooke Bodi meshed three of her four attempts from the charity stripe during the extra session to save Senior Night for the Lady Trojans.
“We never really got into a good flow,” Sturgis coach Amie Burger said. “Our girls kept fighting, trying to get something to work. Once again, we struggled to get shots to fall, allowing Constantine to keep the game close.
“We had a chance in regulation to win, but we were unable to take advantage of it.”
Sturgis held a slim, 23-22 lead at halftime, but found itself trailing, 30-27 entering the final eight minutes of regulation.
Sage Groves finished with a game-high 15 points for Sturgis. Groves also grabbed four rebounds, collected two steals and dished out one assist. De’Ashia Sanders chipped in with 14 points, nine rebounds, steals and an assist for Sturgis.
Bodi and Madison Pueschel each scored seven points for Sturgis. Bodi also grabbed seven rebounds, while Pueschel grabbed five offensive rebounds, along with a steal and an assist.
Brazo and Brianna Wheeler each finished with three points.Brazo collected eight rebounds and a pair of steals.
“We knew tonight we were going to have to work extremely hard against their posts,” Burger added. “Their guards look for their posts, who do a nice job of sealing you at the block.”
Freshman Hannah Outlaw led Constantine with 14 points. Mackenzi Dobosiewicz and Hannah Ley each finished with 10 points.
