A big enough first-half lead helped Battle Creek St. Philip’s girls basketball team fend off host Mendon 46-40 Monday night in a non-league game.
St. Philip constructed a 34-25 halftime lead but was held to just three points in the third quarter. Unfortunately for Mendon, it could only produce seven points in the period, cutting the deficit to five points entering the fourth quarter.
Kameron Haley had 12 points to lead St. Philip and Nina Winkler finished with 10.
Julia Sutter paced the Hornets (5-10) with 17 points and Mary Leighton finished with 10. Hayley Kramer scored nine, while Nancy Steinacker and Alyssa Kramer each had two.
Sutter also had 14 rebounds, Kramer grabbed 10, Steinacker had six and Kramer secured five. Aubrey Crotser and Leighton finished with two apiece.
Leighton led the team with five assists and three steals, and Sutter blocked two shots.
