Schoolcraft flattened Montague 10-1 in Tuesday’s Division 3 baseball quarterfinal at Davenport University, putting the Eagles into the semifinals for back-to-back seasons. A complete game victory on the mound from Marc Shaink and a six-run third inning helped propel them to their 12th consecutive victory.
“I couldn’t more proud of this group of kids,” said Schoolcraft coach Larry Phelps.
It’s been a much different road to East Lansing this time around. Last year, the Eagles were ranked sixth entering the postseason and their deep run didn’t surprise many people. Schoolcraft entered 2018 with a very different cast and dealt with early growing pains, sitting at 8-11 in early May.
“Once we had six conference losses and weren’t going to win that, we just set our sights on getting better for the district tournament,” said Phelps.
The Eagles broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning, using three hits, three walks, and three Montague errors to bring in six runs.
“You don’t have to have as much pressure, you can just throw and relax,” said Shaink of the big inning. Schoolcraft didn’t need an offensive explosion with Shaink pitching, as he allowed only three hits and one sixth-inning run over the complete game victory. He struck out eight, including the final batter.
“Marc does what Marc does, he’s just a bulldog,” said Phelps. “He’s a big, strong kid. He threw strikes and we played pretty good defense behind him.
Schoolcraft’s offense added another run in the fourth inning and three more in the sixth to erase any doubts. Dalton Adams got on base four times with a double, triple, two walks, two runs, and two RBI. Jack Hunt had two hits, two RBI and a run. Shaink added two hits and Wyatt Adams scored twice.
Montague starting pitcher Remington Schneider completed three innings, allowing four hits, five walks, and seven runs (one earned). The lone Wildcat senior Zachary Buchberger allowed two unearned runs on four hits over the next 2.1 innings, with Braden Johnson getting the final two outs. Montague finishes the year at 24-13.
For Schoolcraft, they improve to 20-11 and will face Riverview Gabriel Richard in Friday’s semifinal at Michigan State. You can listen to the semifinal live via JoeInsider.com Friday with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.
