Both Constantine’s Anthony Evilsizor and Sturgis’ Johnathon Sholl were obviously gunning for repeat state championships on June 4, but that’s a very tough thing to accomplish in high school track and field.
Still, Evilsizor and Sholl, our final Safety Glasses USA Boys Track Athletes of the Week for St. Joseph County, gave it one heck of a run to close out their prep careers.
For Evilsizor, the defending Division 3 champion in the 800 meters, it was the emergence of Wyoming Lee junior Thomas Robinson that stood in the way of that feat. Robinson ran strong out front from start to finish for a fantastic time of 1 minute, 53.81 seconds at Comstock Park. Evilsizor ran a season-best 1:55.0 to finish runner-up.
It’s the end of the athletic road for the three-sport Falcons star and he is planning to join the Marine Corps.
Sholl, who will compete at Oakland University next year, had a target on his back after winning the Division 2 title in the 200 meters last year. He turned in what would have been the fastest preliminary time at Zeeland, but he was disqualified after officials claimed he stepped on the lane line too many times.
He bounced back from the devastating news with a third-place finish in the 100.
