Plainwell had a stranglehold on Friday’s Week 7 game at Sturgis by the second quarter and it finished with a 52-9 victory to improve to 5-2 in the Wolverine Conference. The Homecoming loss for Sturgis dropped the program to 2-5.
Plainwell built a 21-1 lead with touchdown runs of 21 and 73 yards by Alex Brown, and a 43-yard TD by Austin Williams. A 41-yard field goal by Luke Morrell made it 24 unanswered points.
Alexis Galvan put Sturgis on the board with a 41-yard field goal, but only 27 seconds later Plainwell’s Brown crossed the goal line from 26 yards out. A few seconds after that possession, Plainwell’s Tristan James recovered a fumble for a touchdown to make it a 38-3 contest at halftime.
Quarterback Matt Root would complete an 18-yard TD pass to Gunnar Gavalis in the third quarter and Root ran for a two-yard score in the fourth to wrap up the scoring for Plainwell.
Garrett Buglione rushed for a six-yard touchdown for Sturgis in the third quarter.
Plainwell outgained Sturgis 323-296 for the game despite running only 29 plays — 30 fewer than Sturgis, which finished with three turnovers.
Avery Cleveland completed 8 of 14 passing attempts for 125 yards for Sturgis, and Zach Chapman was on the receiving end of three of those throws for 50 yards. Brecken Stewart caught two passes for 24 yards, Brian Jordan had one catch for 25 and Max Altimus snagged a reception for 23 yards. Buglione led Sturgis with 85 rushing yards and Altimus had 71 on the ground.
For Plainwell, Brown registered 146 rushing yards on eight carries, while Williams ran for 118 on 10 totes. Root completed 3 of 5 passing attempts for 60 yards.
