The Glen Oaks Vikings Men’s Basketball Team (4-22, 1-14) saw two different late leads disappear, as it fell at home in overtime Wednesday to the visiting Jayhawks of Muskegon Community College, 110-106.
The Jayhawks (12-13, 9-6) would use the 3 point shot to set the tone early, as they built a 9 point lead throughout the first half at 44-35. The Vikings would finish the first half strong, closing out the first 20 minutes on a 6-2 run, to go into halftime trailing 46-41.
The second half saw the Vikings come out firing, opening the half on a 17-10 run to take the lead 58-56. Muskegon would answer right back, however, as they would build the lead back to 69-62 with about 11 minutes left in regulation. After a time out, Glen Oaks would put together the biggest run of the game, going on a 20-3 run to take a 82-72 lead with just over 5 minutes to go in regulation. The next few possessions would see the Vikings stall offensively, and Muskegon made their shots, closing the gap and putting together an 18-6 run of their own to lead 90-88 with 11.3 seconds left. David Miller would sink a solid 16 footer with 5 seconds left to force OT.
Starting overtime, Glen Oaks would once again come out strong, building a 96-91 lead over the first minute and a half, then shortly after a 102-96 lead with just over 2 minutes remaining. Muskegon would force some costly turnovers and get to the free throw line to take the lead at 105-104 with 31.9 seconds left. Glen Oaks would miss their next shot, and would have to foul down the stretch hoping the Jayhawks would miss their free throws. Unfortunately for GOCC, Muskegon made their free throws to seal the deal with a final score of 110-106.
“This one really stings,” said Viking Head Coach David Victor.
“We did enough things throughout the game to win, fought back to take the lead, build a solid lead, and then made too many costly mistakes, whether it was shot selection or bad passes. Credit Muskegon for forcing those mistakes, but we need to be better down the stretch in the future to seal the deal on games like this.”
Three Vikings posted double-doubles: Mike Barnfield had 29 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 steals. David Miller had 27 points and 11 rebounds, and Adam Scott had 16 points and 13 rebounds. Kal-El Spencer added 12 points and 2 very nice dunks, and Jaquantay Rouser tallied 10 points and 9 assists.
The Vikings will next be in action this Friday as they travel to Lake Michigan College to take on the RedHawks. Tip is set for 7:30.
