The top two singles players for Kalamazoo Hackett also proved to be arguably two of the best singles players in the state, as Natalie Moyer and Maggie Ketels both won Division 4 individual state championships for the Irish on Saturday.
Moyer, the No.1-seed at No. 1 singles, took the title with a finals win over Taylor Smith from Jackson Lumen Christi, 6-4, 6-0. Moyer didn’t lose a set the entire tournament, and of the eight sets she did play, she won four of them by a 6-0 count.
Equally dominant at No. 2 singles was Ketels, who also did not lose a set all day. Ketels was also slated as the top seed, and faced No. 3 seed Oriana Gulvesan of Ann Arbor Greenhills in the final. Ketels cruised in that matchup, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Overall, Hackett finished in sixth place in the team standings. Schoolcraft, which also reached the Division 4 finals, finished tied for 12thwith Portland.
For Schoolcraft, Kelsey Feddema and Annika Varker had a solid run at second doubles, reaching the quarterfinals. The duo lost to the second seeds out of the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Nolwenn Crosnier and Kelleigh Keating, 6-0, 7-6(2).
Portage Central finished 8thoverall in Division 2, capped by multiple quarterfinal appearances in the doubles flights.
At No. 3 singles, fourth-seeded Anjana Krishnan reached the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lillian Gorelick of Okemos. Krishnan lost the quarterfinal matchup to Marlo Hudson of Bloomfield Hills Marian, 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 1 doubles, Gabi Kizer and Maddie Wojcik defeated Maddie Paryaski and Jessica Nuhaj of Trenton, 6-0, 6-1, to reach the quarterfinals. The Mustang duo then fell to the No. 2 seed of Layla Bellissimo and Emily Hirsch from Birmingham Seaholm.
Allison Sachwitz and Kimberly Kovacik advanced to the quarterfinals at No. 3 doubles, beating Megan Lesperance and April Teflow of Holly, 6-4, 7-5. They then lost to the No. 1 seed Jessica Buechner and Lea Cazaudumec of Birmingham Seaholm, 6-1, 6-1.
At No. 4 doubles, the sixth-seeded Samhita Sunkara and Alyson Miller beat Cara Lash and Abby Cooper of Berkley, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5. Their day ended at the hands of No. 3 seed Anna Fay and Sophia Renucci of Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern, 6-3, 7-6(3).
Representing the area in Division 3 action was Sturgis, which finished tied for seventh as a team, with 10 points.
At No. 2 singles, Krista Hart advanced to the quarterfinal with a win over Rylee Woodring of Whitehall, 7-6(4), 6-1. Hart lost to No. 2 seed Deena Haddad of Flint Powers Catholic, 6-0, 6-3.
At No. 4 singles, Hope Eichorn reached the quarterfinal with a win over Hannah Kelley of Fruitport, 6-3, 6-3. Eichorn lost to No. 2 seed Avneet Deol of Ada Forest Hills Eastern, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles action, the No. 3 doubles tandem of Anna Schuller and Rebecca Barkley reached the quarterfinals with a win over Madelyn Mascarin and Charlotte Fajardo of St. Clair, 6-7(2), 7-6(4), 6-4. The duo lost to No.1 seed Maya Nassif and Ruhe Nayak of Detroit Country Day, 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 4 doubles, Jessica Haller and Fuuka Kainuma reached the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Katie Jensen and Lauren Mcqueen of St. Clair. The Sturgis duo lost to the top seed from Cranbrook Kingswood, Simrin Nagaraju and Mia Inakage, 6-1, 6-2.
