Athens scored 20 unanswered points at home Friday for a 20-8 victory over Colon.
The Magi, who have not dropped five straight, capped a 68-yard drive midway through the first quarter with a two-yard touchdown run by James Thompson and a Hunter Boals two-point conversion run.
Early in the second period, Athens (5-1) responded with a 12-yard TD run by Cody Richardson (PAT kick failed). Athens would regain the lead for good eight minutes later on a 91-yard pass from Dan Jacobs to Andy Oswalt. After the two-point conversion failed, Athens led 12-8 with 2:50 remaining in the third.
Brock Hurst’s three-yard scoring run at the 6:56 mark in the fourth quarter sealed the deal for Athens, which finished with 316 yards of total offense, led by Jacobs’ 8-for-13 passing performance for 179 yards.
Phillip Alva completed 4 of 11 passing attempts for 70 yards for Colon. Boals led the Magi with 64 rushing yards, followed by Brandon Crawford (26), James Thompson (21) and Austin Knauss (five). Jonathan West caught two passes for Colon for 30 yards, Andy Stoll had one for 25 and Grant Wilson had one reception for 15 yards.
Chris Frye attempted two passes for Colon and was intercepted once. The Magi also lost a fumble. Athens fumbled twice and lost both.
Defensively, Boals finished with eight tackles to pace Colon. Brandon Crawford had six stops, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup, Josh Allerding produced six tackles, and Brenden Shelton had six stops (three for a loss), a sack and fumble recovery.
