The Glen Oaks Community College women’s basketball team secured its first win of the young season Thursday, beating visiting Andrews University junior varsity 60-50.
Sophomore guard/forward Gabrielle Russell led the Vikings with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting (66.7 percent) from the field. She drained three 3-pointers, as did Tacaya Bryant, a freshman guard who added 17 points.
Sirena Pitts (sophomore) scored 13, Lakara Taylor had six and Jenisis Pope finished with three points to round out the scoring for GOCC, which is now 1-3 for the season with a trip to Joliet Junior College Saturday up next. Pope was also responsible for 10 rebounds, while Taylor pulled down six. Bryant dished four assists and Pitts made a pair of blocks.
“The ladies fought hard the whole game and hung on to get their first win of the season,” first-year coach Morgan Balcom said.
